How might we improve the start-up experience of TeleAI?

Overview

Scope: Improve and speed up the start-up experience in TeleAI
Users: Heavy machinery operators (primarily at mine sites)
Role: UX/ UI Designer
Tools: Adobe XD, Balsamiq

Insight

The customer success team identified user confusion around vehicle status with both internal and external users. This led to errors when choosing vehicles and increased the start-up time for users, affecting their productivity.

Define

Make more information readily available, add the ability to filter and save frequently used vehicles, clarify vehicle statuses and improve information architecture on the screen and for components.

Process

Vehicle Card Redesign

The vehicle card received a design overhaul. Improved labelling and typography, improved colour use, updated status symbols (available, occupied, offline, error).

Existing card design states (left to right): available, offline, occupied, error.

The old design confused users β€” the green βœ“ indicated a vehicle was occupied and thus not accessible to the user and the red X indicated a vehicle was available to use. The vehicle type was indicated with an icon and name, but poor colour contrast made it challenging to view, and information about the vehicle’s autonomous configuration was not shown.

Redesigned vehicle card anatomy and states: available, more info, occupied, offline, error.

I revised the status symbols and colours then re-designed the vehicle card with a chin that contained all text information and the status. To improve trouble-shooting a β€˜more info’ state was designed that could be uncovered with a long press and would display additional information to the user.

Filters & Favourites

I designed a new feature for the start-up flow: filter and favourites. This gave the user the ability to filter the selections based on the vehicle type, status, autonomous configuration or favourites. The goal was to expedite the start-up flow and assist with initial installation and troubleshooting for HLS technicians

Outcomes

The Tele-Ai redesign (including the new start-up flow) was exhibited at MINExpo 2021 in Las Vegas where it was not only well received but company representatives observed that visitors had an easier and faster time navigating the system on their own. In order to further validate the success of this feature I’d conduct benchmarking tests to measure the time taken to complete start-up and also to measure the success rate.
